Colonials Win Inaugural ACC Women's Championship

WINSTON-SALEM, NC:  The George Washington University Women won the first women’s ACC hockey tournament versus North Carolina State University, by a score of 5-3.  The inaugural event was held on Saturday, February 15, prior to the men’s D2 semifinal games. Between periods, local girls youth hockey teams were able to take the ice to the delight of the crowd.

N C State opened the scoring in the first period when Hannah Murphy put the puck in the net with an assist coming from Erica Jacobson. George Washington would get on the board less than two minutes later when Shelby Weaver got an unassisted goal.  GWU would then take the lead with a goal from Alyse Borelli, with assists from Spencer Neville and Angela Baker.  NCSU would tie the game when Emily Petersen put the puck in the net with help from Carrie Gaudet de Lestard.  It was Shelby Weaver closing out the scoring in the first with a power play goal with just 58 seconds remaining, with an assist from Spencer Neville.

The second period goal by GWU’s Maria Stefanova would end up becoming the game winner, with help from Alyse Borelli.

The third period started off with N C State’s Emily Petersen potting her second goal of the game with the assist coming from Robin Petersen.  With forty six seconds remaining, Alyse Borelli would finish the scoring for the game.

Blair Lalor was in net for George Washington, making 28 saves on 31 shots.  NCSU’s Veronica Heyl made 34 saves on 39 shots faced.
