Colonials Down Hokies in Tournament Opener

WINSTON-SALEM, NC: In the first of four quarterfinal playoff games for the ACCHL (Atlantic Coast Conference Hockey League) it was the #4 seed George Washington University Colonials defeating the #5 seeded Virginia Tech Hokies 6-3 on Friday, February 14. The noon game kicked off a full day of hockey at noon.

George Washington’s Justin Storer opened the scoring with a power play goal five minutes into the first, assisted by Samuel Kirby and Cooper May. With just twenty seconds remaining in the period, the Hokies would tie the game when Trevor Murphy scored with the helper coming from  Mason Wildgrube. It would only take the Colonials seven seconds to regain the lead, when Alec Yerkovich set up Augie Burkhardt for the goal.

GWU would take control of the game in the second period scoring three times. Zach Arden opened the scoring with helpers from Sam Powers and Augie Burkhardt.  It was Burkhardt scoring his second goal of the game with assists from Eddie Tuohy and Diego Rebollar. Nick Karlson would score a short handed goal to close out the period with an assist from Justin Storer.

Virginia Tech would attempt a comeback by scoring twice in the third period. It was the brothers Slater, junior forward Luke, from freshman brother Eric getting the first goal of the period. With 5:16 remaining, CJ Hathaway would score with the assists coming from  Eric Matynowski and Gavin Morrison. Zach Arden from GWU would end VT’s scoring with the final goal of the game. Christopher Finkelstein and Eddie Tuohy would get the assists. Virginia Tech would pull the goalie, but were unable to get any closer.

Winning goaltender Graham Roy made 43 saves on 46 shots. Virginia Tech used two goalies during the game, with Brian Snigur playing the first 40 minutes making 21 saves on 26 shots. Collin Couture stepped in for the third period making seven saves on eight shots.
