VT Women defeat NC State in Championship
Hokies Take ACC Title in Their First Season!
WINSTON-SALEM, NC: On Saturday, March 20, the Virginia Tech women’s hockey team defeated the women from N. C. State at the ACCHL tournament, by a score of 9-7.
The Hokies Sarah LaPorte opened the scoring with 14:06 remaining with an assist from Kat Fichera. With 9:55 remaining, Lily Harp from Virginia Tech scored unassisted. Harp would score again a minute and thirty seconds later with assists from LaPorte and Holly Turner. N. C. State would get on the board with 5:36 remaining with a goal from Kate Erb, assisted by Robin Petersen. Tech’s Harp scored with 2:22 remaining with an assist from Turner. With fourteen seconds remaining, N. C. State would round out the first period scoring with Jess Lehning scoring on helpers from Emily Petersen and R Petersen.
Tech got on the board in the second with 13:23 remaining when Brenna Neuman dented the twine with helpers from Lily Espino and Kat Fichera. N. C. State would get the remaining two goals of the period with 9:30 and 1:26 remaining. Danielle Aiello scored with an assist from Carrie de Letard, and Emily Petersen would score with help from Hannah Murphy.
Forty-one seconds into the third period the Ice Pack’s Aiello tie the game with an assist from Emily Petersen. State would then take the lead for the first time with 14:55 remaining when de Letard would feed E Petersen for the goal. Fifty-four seconds later, Tech would knot the score at six apiece when Neuman socred her second goal of the game with help from Harp. The Hokies would regain the lead with 13:08 remaining when Espino scored with the assist coming from LaPorte. N. C. State would tie the game again, with their final goal of the game when Aiello would complete her hat trick with assists from de Letard and Emily Petersen. Holly Turner would score what would be the winning goal with 6:58 remaining. Kat Fichera of Tech would complete the scoring with just nine seconds remaining.
Brynlee Anderson was in goal for the Hokies, while Veronica Heyl was guarding the net for the Ice Pack.
