#7 Tar Heels Upset #2 Hoyas

North Carolina Impressive in Tourney Opener

Winston-Salem, NC: In the final quarterfinal game of the ACCHL D2 men’s tournament, it was the #7 seed University of North Carolina defeating #2 Georgetown University by a score of 5-2. 

The Tar Heels would get on the board first, in the first period. Brian Hogan would get the goal with help from Creighton Walsh. Georgetown would tie it up with 9:02 remaining in the second period, when Danny Overcash would score with an assist from Peter Korn.  Just forty-four seconds later, with 8:18 remaining, Creighton Mahan would get his second assist of the game on a goal by David Mahan. UNC would score three unanswered goals in the third before Georgetown completed the scoring for the game.

Brian Hogan scored unassisted with 15:17 left in the third. Mischa Subotin would score with an assist from David Mahan with 10:40 remaining. It would be Mahan setting up Creighton Walsh for the final Tar Heel goal of the game. With 1:18 remaining, J P Ottariano would score for the Hoyas with an assist from Rob Churchill.

Will Douthit got the win in net for UNC, making 23 saves on 25 shots. Mark Perrachia would make 43 saves on 48 shots.

The Tar Heels became only the third #7 seed in the 27-year history of the ACC Hockey League to win their quarterfinal game.
