Hoyas Head to Championship Tournament as #1 Seed!

Georgetown University was founded 234 years ago.  The Georgetown women’s hockey team was founded two years ago.  The young women who are part of the Hoya women’s hockey program truly are trailblazers.

Last year, led by founder Meaghan Steck and captain Hannah Walsh, the women’s team advanced to the league championship game in the season-ending tournament in Winston-Salem, NC.  Although the Hoyas did not prevail in that game, they had a very successful inaugural season.

This year, Georgetown women’s hockey team has a winning record and once again is in contention for the league championship.  The Hoyas are in Division W-2 of the Southeast Region of the ACHA (American Collegiate Hockey Association) and in the W-2 Division of the ACCHL (Atlantic Coast Collegiate Hockey League).  Other universities in the ACCHL, along with Georgetown, are George Washington University, University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, North Carolina State, and Highpoint.

The Hoyas have two league games remaining before the season-ending championship tournament that will take place in Winston-Salem, NC, during the weekend of February 17, 2023.  Having secured impressive league victories this fall, the Hoyas are well-positioned to compete once again for the league championship, along with the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, and North Carolina State—the defending league champion.

But there have been challenges and growing pains.  For example, last year the team did not have matching game jerseys for most of the season.  This year, the team’s once-a-week practice slot year begins at 11:15 pm.  In addition, Georgetown’s new coach was unable to continue this year and parents and former players had to step in.

Despite these challenges, the Hoya women’s hockey team is resilient, determined to succeed, and unafraid to compete against well-established programs.  For example, on Saturday, January 21, 2023, the Hoyas faced-off against one of the top women’s hockey team in the Eastern US—the US Naval Academy.  The Navy women’s hockey team (founded in 2009) currently is ranked #2 in the Southeast Division of the ACHA W-2.  They have a rink on campus, practice five times a week, and have a full squad of 20 highly skilled players.  During the first two periods of Saturday’s game, Navy outskated, outshot, and outscored the Hoyas 8-0.  But in the final period, the Hoyas did not give up, continued to play hard, supported each other, and held Navy scoreless.  Hoya netminder Addison Basile (Freshman, Middletown, NJ) was especially impressive, saving 41 shots on goal for the game.

The team is coached by Georgetown’s “Coach K”—Bill Kaufman, father of Hoya standout Aynsley Kaufman (Sr, Long Hill, NJ), who on November 12, 2022 set a team record by scoring five goals in a league game against the University of Virginia.
