Penn State Wins ACC Championship in Inaugural Season

Penn State (18-2-0-1) finished their inaugural season in the ACC Premier Division as the Season Champions earning the Nittany Lions the #1 seed and a first round bye.  NC State would defeat Virginia Tech in the Quarterfinals to advance to meet Penn State in the Semifinal Game.  In what turned out to be a defensive battle, Penn State edged the Icepack 1-0 in the most exciting game of the tournament to date.  Gavin Long would have the lone goal, with brother and Team Captain, Ryan Long earning the assist.

That win placed them into their first ACC Championship Game on Sunday, but to everyone's dismay, the power went out in the arena just prior to warmups.  With the day drawing on and the Teams needing to get back to the universities to begin their academic week, the league postponed the Championship game until Thursday prior to Regionals.  The puck was dropped at the Saint James in northern Virginia at 11pm and the tournament was resumed.  #1 Penn State vs. #2 North Carolina.

Penn State found the net early and took a 2-0 lead in the first period and would hold on to a 3-1 hard fought victory over the Tar Heels.  Ryan Long would be voted the Tournament MVP as well as the ACC Player of the Year (Penn State's First Player to be given the League's Highest Honor).  Nathan Shuman (PSU) was honored as the ACC Defenseman of the Year and Patrick O'Shaughnessy (UNC) was honored as the ACC Rookie of the Year.
