ACC Women's Fall Tournament Champions

The ACC held it's Second Annual Fall Classic Women's Tournament in Lynchburg, Virginia.  All eight member teams and two guest teams (West Virginia and host Liberty) participated in the three-day event.  Each team played three league games with the top two teams playing in the Championship Game on Sunday.

For the second consecutive year, the Cavaliers of Virginia have won the Fall Classic Women's Tournament - back-to-back Champions!  The Cavaliers began their weekend with a tough battle with High Point, winning in overtime, 3-2.  The Panthers, who were last year's ACC Champions skated with the Cavaliers for more than 65 minutes but fell in a 9 player shoot-out.  Tess Cleary scored the winning goal and was named ACC Player of the Game.

In the second game, the Cavaliers took the ice against the Revs of George Washington.  They took no prisoners and left no doubt about the outcome of the game - from the initial puck drop, Virginia dominated winning 13-0.  Avery Buchanan was named the ACC Player of the Game.

The third game pitted Virginia with in state rival, Virginia Tech.  Every time these two teams have taken the ice together in the past several years, the game has been extremely hard fought, competitive, and seems to come down to the final minute of play.  Last year, the Hokies edged the Cavaliers in double overtime to win their Championship semi-final game.  The Cavaliers came to avenge that loss - they took a 4-2 lead into the third period and managed to outlast the Hokies 4-3 for the win and earn the ACC Fall Classic Tournament Championship for the second consecutive year.  Defenseman Olivia Sliwa was named the Player of the Game.

Virginia then played a fourth game for the weekend against our guest and tournament host, Liberty, who is ranked #1 in the country. The Cavaliers fell to the Flames 11-2 (who went 4-0 for the weekend and showed why they are #1 in the ACHA), with an exhausted short bench.  The Cavaliers were the only team to score on the Flames all weekend.

Special thanks to Rena and the Liberty Flames for being gracious hosts for the ACC Fall Classic, and for which without their extraordinary time and efforts, our tournament would not be possible.

Congratulations to the team, coaching staff, and entire Cavalier hockey family for a tremendous weekend of hockey.  And of course, I was honored and privileged to participate in the Annual UVA Mike Photo!
