Tennessee hockey joined the league this year in the reconstituted SEC College Hockey Conference and wasted no time proving they can compete with ACC Hockey's top programs. The Vols started the season by traveling more than 1,000 miles in one weekend to match up against M1 North Carolina and M1 Kentucky. The Vols fell short on both games, but would rebound strong against ACC M2 runner-up, West Virginia.
In their home opening weekend, Tennessee hosted West Virginia for back-to-back games in Knoxville. The Vols took the lessons learned from the previous weekend losses to M1 teams, and came together for two statement wins, (4-1, 5-0).
Tennessee Freshman Finn DeStefano was a dominating force on the ice for the entire weekend resulting in 2 goals. "Great weekend! The older guys really welcomed me in and supported me. We picked up two huge wins and I'm elated I could make an impact," stated Finn. "And the best part, I got to do it in front of my family!"
Finn hails from Saint Louis, MO and last played at Chaminade Prep. He is currently in his first semester of his collegiate journey, and is majoring in Economics.
Also want to give a special shout out to Head Coach Drew King. The last time we were in the same arena was COVID year when Tennessee was invited to compete in the ACC Championship Tournament (the SEC tournament had been cancelled due to the pandemic). In the "Hockey is a Small World" category, Drew was the Captain of an outstanding Vol Team that advanced to the tournament semifinals. Drew was a noticeable force on the ice then and now he is making an enormous impact from the bench.
Congratulations to Finn, Head Coach Drew King, the entire Tennessee Vol hockey staff and family for a phenomenal start to the inaugural SEC season. Looking forward to seeing the growth of Vol Hockey for the remainder of the season and for many years to come.
Next up, it doesn't get any easier for Finn or his teammates. Tennessee hockey is back on the road next weekend to take on a very strong Virginia Tech team.
