In the inaugural year for the ACC M1 North Conference, several ACC Teams have found early success against out of conference ranked opponents. Now with the season heating up in November, ACC Teams are lining up at the blue lines against league rivals. This past weekend Oswego State hosted a pair of games with instate rival Syracuse. and Delaware travelled to Pitt for a double header.
UDel laced up and took advantage of an injury depleted Panther squad. The Blue Hens bested Pitt 4-2 in the weekend opener and finished with a strong effort from both teams, winning 4-3 OT. UDel came away from their bus travels west with 5 points and top the ACC North Division with 10 points.
Head Coach Todd Mittelmeier credited the Blue Hens victories as a total team effort but highlighted Senior Tanner Mahoney for leading the team over the weekend. Tanner, tallied 2 goals and 1 apple for the weekend, including a between the legs shootout goal on Saturday.
Ironically, Tanner originally hails from Venetia, Pennsylvania, an outlying suburb of Pittsburgh. He previously skated with the New Jersey Hitmen (NCDC). Impressive both on and off the ice, he is working to complete his degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering this year. Tanner has been on the Dean's List since enrolling at UDel and has a twin brother attending at ACC rival NC State.
"Tanner leads this team on the ice with his play and effort both in games and practice. He is the hardest worker who also has tremendous skill. His puck possession is unmatched in the league." - Head Coach Todd Mittelmeier.
Congratulations to Tanner, Head Coach Todd Mittelmeier, the entire University of Delaware hockey staff and family for a phenomenal start to the inaugural ACC M1 season.
Next up this weekend, another tough opponent awaits. The Blue Hens have a home and home versus ACC North rival Stony Brook.
