CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- A late comeback by George Washington University was shattered by late game heroics and the Virginia Cavaliers defeated the visiting Colonials 8-7, to improve to 9-3 on the season.

With a majority of the first period being spent in the offensive zone for the Cavaliers, 3rd year Jordan Friedman opened up the scoring to give the Cavaliers a one goal lead. Four minutes later, Friedman scored his second goal of the night on a powerplay after the Colonials were called for a hooking penalty. Over a minute later, 2nd year Ben Foley snuck one past George Washington’s goalie to give the Cavaliers a 3-0 lead heading into first intermission.

Nearly two minutes into the second period, the Colonials finally got on the board to cut the lead to two goals, but it didn’t last long as 2nd year Mark Brady put Virginia back up by three goals. Within two minutes of the goal by Brady, the Colonials would score three unanswered goals within a six minute span to make it a 4-4 game.

“I just told them to jump start” said Head Coach Colin Davis, who quickly took a timeout following the Colonials comeback. “Told them to restart the game, get back to basics, and execute”.

Following the timeout, the Cavaliers would battle back with three unanswered goals of their own. 2nd year Dan Glavin started the scoring, followed by goals from 2nd year Reed Brady and with under two minutes left and 2nd year Maury Winter scored on a 5 on 3 powerplay to give the Cavaliers a three goal lead heading into the third period.

The Colonials scored quickly to trim their deficit to only two goals. Following their goal, two costly penalties on the Cavaliers gave George Washington a 5 on 3 powerplay opportunity, but they would not capitalize on either. With under six minutes left, the Colonials would score back to back goals within two minutes of each other to tie the game. With the game looking like it would be heading to overtime, the Cavaliers had one last push up the ice and 2nd year Kevin McCollum scored the game winning goal with just 16 seconds left on the clock to give Virginia their ninth win of the season.

2nd year Ryan Montgomery had 35 saves as he improved to 8-2 on the season, while Friedman finished with four points and 4th year captain Thomas Livingston finished with three assists.

The Cavaliers will host the Naval Academy on Saturday, January 31 at 3:30PM at Main Street Arena. This is the last regular season game before the teams travel to Annapolis, MD. for the 20th ACCHL Championship Tournament.
