Duke University

Duke University was one of the original eight founding members of the ACC Hockey League in 1995 - Duke and UNC are the only two teams who have been members of the ACC Hockey League for the entire 22-year history.  Duke Hockey has also been one of the League's most successful programs winning their first of three ACC Championships in 1998.  For more than a decade, the Duke Blue Devils were always among the top teams - from 2003-2009 Duke hockey competed in every ACC Championship Game.  Behind the strength of three "Lake Brothers", (Brian, Jeff, and Steve) the Blue Devils dominated the league by winning two ACC Championships and two Season Championships in 2004 and 2006.  In 2005, Georgetown University played spoiler in the ACC Championship Game, preventing Duke from having the first League Championship "Three-pete".  Duke University Hockey is second only to Georgetown University in the number of League Championships with a total of three.

Recently, Duke ice hockey has been known for it's incredibly talented post-graduate students (2016 Forward of the Year, Travis Buck, 2016 Defenseman of the Year, Kevin Brooke, and ACC All-Star, Ellis Baehr) and tenacious goal tending (Goaltenders of the Year Andre Rynback (2015) and Nick Barra (2017)).

Duke has been coached by future ACCHL Hall of Famers, Brent Selmon (since 2000), and Bill Trofi (since 2008) - the longest standing coaches in the league.  Both Brent and Bill were named Coaches of the Year in 2016.

Duke currently has four players inducted into the ACC Hockey Hall of Fame:  1) Steve Lake (2000-2004), 2) Jeff Lake (2002-2006), Marco Perez (2006-2010), and Travis Buck (2013-2017).

Last spring, after another successful ACC Season for the Blue Devils, Duke Hockey was beset with tragedy when Duke Junior, and future Team Captain, Mike Doherty went missing after walking back to his fraternity from a social event.  The Team immediately set up #18MD #BringMikeHome.  The authorities finally discovered Mike after many agonizing weeks without answers - sadly, he had passed.   Mike was the team's second leading scorer, ACC Player of the Week, a leader, and friend to all who knew him.   He is sorely missed by his teammates and the entire league.

The Blue Devils Ice Hockey Team has enjoyed phenomenal financial support from the university and the loyalty of many fans over the years, as well as the rink they skate at in Hillsborough, NC.  Duke hockey has been a dominate force in ACC Hockey and will continue to be part of league tradition, lore, and history for many years to come.
