University of North Carolina - Charlotte Wins First ACC Hockey Championship!

UNC-Charlotte started the season losing three close games in the ACC Stephen Russell Tournament.  However, the team never gave up and pulled together to finish the regular season on a 5-1 run in league games to earn a bid in the tournament as the #7 Seed.  The 49ers drew a tough schedule starting with the defending league champions, the 7-1-0-1 University of Virginia.  It was a hard fought defensive battle, but behind the leadership of first year coach Tobin Trautz, and 2 goals from junior Andrew Miller, the 49ers pulled through to a 3-1 victory.  That victory earned them the right to play the #1 Seed and Season Champions George Washington University.  Again, with aggressive back checking and phenomenal goal tending of senior Dan Ritter, the 49ers shut down the high powered offense of the Colonials for a 4-2 win.  In the finals, UNC-C jumped out to a 3-1 lead and never relinquished the lead to a stubborn Wake Forest team that would fight back until the end.  UNC-C is the first #7 Seed to not only advance to the finals, but win the ACC Hockey Championship.  Dan Ritter, who only allowed 5 goals in 3 games was named the tournament MVP.  Congratulations to the 49ers for a record breaking season and their first ACC Hockey Championship!
