JMU wins two out of three games, enjoys all-star activities

For the weekend of October 9-11, the Dukes traveled down to Raleigh, NC to participate in the ACCHL kickoff tournament. The weekend jamboree was held in memory of former NC State goaltender Stephen Russell, who passed away in 2009.

On Friday, the Dukes were able to work past a Wake Forest University team that battled hard in the neutral zone throughout the game. The Dukes won 4-0, completing the first shutout in team history! Blaise Hudak, Keegan Kelly, Robbie Souza, and Justin Wolf contributed goals, and goaltender Mike Gefell held down the fort with big saves during the second period.

Saturday morning, several of the players participated in a league-wide skills competition and All-Star game. Notably, Robbie Souza won the shootout competition, while goaltender Drew Sandler finished in third place. Seniors Justin Wolf, Tyler Shaw, and Connor Keelan participated in the All-Star game for Team North.

After the festivities wound down, the Dukes took on High Point University for the first time since their BRHC Championship in 2014. JMU pummeled High Point to another shutout by a score of 9-0. Freshman Keegan Kelly scored his first career hat-trick in the contest, and goaltenders Gefell and Sandler split time in the back-to-back shutout.

On Sunday, a worn-down JMU squad took on UNC-Charlotte in a matinee game. The Dukes battled hard in the first period, then succumbed a 3-0 lead in the second after some penalty problems. The Dukes grinded back to cut the lead to 3-2 in the third, but gave up an empty net goal at the end.

The Dukes are looking forward to taking on the Blue Devils from Duke University on Saturday, October 17th in Charlottesville. Puck drops at 9:00 PM at Main Street Arena. We can't wait to see you there!
